Beyond Their Time

Accessibility

Text size, screen readers, motion and contrast in Beyond Their Time.

Beyond Their Time follows the settings you already have, rather than asking you to set things up again. There is no separate text size or contrast switch in the app on purpose: your device's settings are the one place.

Text size and zoom

Zoom in with your browser (Ctrl or ⌘ and +). The page reflows to fit: at twice the size the menus and forms still fit the window, and on a narrow screen nothing needs scrolling sideways. No text is drawn smaller than 12 pixels at normal size, and pinch-to-zoom is never turned off on a phone.

Screen readers

Every button has a name, even the ones that are only an icon. Photos are described by the memory's title and the people named in them. A dialog is announced by its title; while it's open you stay inside it, and when it closes you're back on the button that opened it. Upload bars say how far along they are.

Keyboard

Everything can be reached with Tab. The first stop on every page is Skip to content. Menus open with Enter or Space; the arrow keys move through them and Escape closes them and takes you back to where you were. On a memory, Enter on the heart opens the other gestures.

Motion

If your device is set to reduce motion, the app follows it: nothing glides when it jumps to a section, cards don't lift under the pointer, loading shapes don't pulse, and a slideshow's photos don't slowly zoom. Spinners still turn, because they tell you something is happening.

Contrast and colour

Text meets the WCAG AA contrast ratio (4.5 to 1) in light and dark, on both the plum of a remembered page and the terracotta of a living one. Where the keyboard is on the page is shown with a solid ring in the page's colour. Light, dark or auto is your choice — see Light, dark or auto.

If something doesn't work for you

Tell us with Feedback, and say what you use — a screen reader, a zoom level, a keyboard. It goes straight to the team. See Sending feedback.
