The furnace at 2am
Who they were
January, minus twenty-two, and our furnace died with a newborn in the house. I didn't even call John — my wife did, because she knew I'd be too proud. He was at the door in fifteen minutes in his slippers with a toolbox and a thermos. Had it running by three. Refused money. Took a coffee.
That was John. He was the person everyone called.

Thirty years, same church

Mom wanted a quiet dinner. Dad booked the parish hall, the same one, and invited everyone who was there the first time — plus everyone who wasn't. He danced with her to the same song and told the car story again, and she laughed like she'd never heard it. Ninety dollars and a borrowed car, thirty years later.
